PRACTICAL BUYER GUIDE
Calculate the real daily cost of Japanese dog food
Use the delivered price, total pack weight and the exact product’s daily feeding amount instead of comparing bag price or price per kilogram alone.

Collect four numbers under one set of conditions
Record the product price, shipping charge, total net weight and the daily amount for the dog. For a multipack, total weight is the weight of one unit multiplied by the number of units. Compare tax and shipping on the same basis across merchants.
Conditional points, member tiers, introductory offers, subscriptions and coupons can change. Keep the normal purchase comparison separate, or include only a discount that can definitely be used for that order and record the calculation date.
Calculate grams, days and daily cost
Comparable price equals product price plus shipping minus a confirmed discount. Price per gram equals comparable price divided by total grams. Daily cost equals price per gram multiplied by the daily grams. Days per purchase equals total grams divided by daily grams.
For a fictional example, a 3,000 g bag costing ¥4,280 plus ¥550 shipping has a comparable price of ¥4,830. At 85 g per day, it costs about ¥137 per day and lasts about 35.3 days. This demonstrates the method only; use the current listing and package for a real product.
Re-read the feeding guide for every product
Equal body weight does not make equal gram portions appropriate across formulas. Energy density and feeding directions differ, and an old food’s 100 g daily portion cannot simply be copied to a new food. Use the current package’s life-stage and weight row as a starting point.
Japan’s Ministry of the Environment describes commercial feeding amounts as guides that should be adjusted while observing activity, condition and body weight. The cost calculation helps compare purchases; it does not prescribe an individual dog’s ration.
Add mixed feeding components separately
For dry food plus a pouch or topper, calculate the daily cost of each component and add them. A pouch is not automatically one meal or one day, and its feeding purpose may be complete, complementary or snack.
Price per 100 g is useful for pack-size comparisons of the same product. Daily cost is more useful when formulas have different energy densities and feeding amounts. Neither number establishes nutritional quality or suitability.
Include storage and waste in the decision
A larger bag may have a lower unit price but take much longer to finish. If it cannot be stored according to the manufacturer’s directions and food is discarded, the advertised unit price is not the household’s effective cost. Retain the original bag, date and lot information.
