Old pack or renewed formula? Verify a Japanese dog food update

Keep old and new product facts separate while checking the exact name, JAN, net weight, ingredients, guaranteed analysis, calories and feeding directions.

A new design does not tell you what changed

A Rakuten listing may say that old and new packages will be supplied in sequence. That statement alone does not show whether only the artwork changed or whether net weight, ingredients, guaranteed analysis, calories or feeding directions changed too. Record the old and new versions separately before deciding they are equivalent.

Japan’s Pet Food Safety Act requires the product name, best-before date, ingredients, country of origin, and responsible business name and address. Industry fair-label rules also cover purpose, net quantity, feeding directions and composition. Together, these fields make a practical comparison checklist.

Match the complete product identity

Compare the formal product name, dog life stage, breed-size wording, flavour or formula, food format, net weight and pack count. Then compare the feeding-purpose statement, ingredient list, guaranteed analysis, calorie unit, feeding table, country of origin and whether the named business is a manufacturer, importer or seller.

A JAN or other product code is a strong matching clue when the manufacturer, retailer and physical package show the same number. It is not a universal promise that unchanged codes mean unchanged contents, or that every package redesign receives a new code. Use it with the other fields.

Keep marketplace evidence attached to the right variant

Multi-variant pages can combine several weights, flavours and life stages. Confirm the selected option before reading the specification, and look for notes such as “old package image” or “package subject to change.” Prefer the manufacturer’s current product page over text embedded in an old thumbnail.

If the current version matters, ask the merchant which formal product name, JAN, net weight and label version will be shipped. Save the answer and its date. A general reply that the products are “the same” is less useful than an item-by-item confirmation.

Confirm the delivered package before opening

Photograph the front, the full Japanese label panel, barcode, best-before date and lot code. If the delivered details differ from the order, keep the item unopened and contact the merchant with the order number and photographs.

When ingredients, calories or feeding directions changed, do not automatically serve the old number of grams. Use the renewed package and manufacturer transition guidance. For a serious allergy, therapeutic diet or chronic condition, confirm a change with the manufacturer and veterinarian before feeding.

Put the guide into practice

Start with two recorded products that share a life stage and form. Their inclusion is an example for using the database, not a feeding recommendation.
