How to store opened dog food without losing the evidence

Keep the original package

The U.S. FDA recommends retaining pet food in its original bag, including when the bag is placed inside another storage container. The package preserves the product name, manufacturer, best-before date, UPC and lot number that may be needed for a complaint or recall investigation.

Close the bag before closing the outer container. Store it where the dog and children cannot reach it. If food must be poured into a container, save the complete label information and wash and fully dry the container before every new bag. Do not top up old kibble with a new lot.

Make opening day a repeatable routine

Record the opening date, photograph the lot and date panel, inspect the seal and food, and read the package-specific after-opening directions. Calculate how many days the bag should last by dividing net weight by the dog’s daily amount. A printed best-before date does not create one universal after-opening period for every formula and home.

Use a dedicated dry scoop or a kitchen scale. Keep wet hands and washed utensils out of the bag until they are completely dry. Wash food bowls and measuring tools regularly and dry them before reuse.

Control heat, moisture and light

Store dry food and unopened cans in a cool, dry place away from direct sun and appliances that release heat or steam. Japanese summers can make cupboards near windows, cookers or sinks unsuitable even when they look convenient. Follow the manufacturer if it gives a specific temperature or storage location.

Refrigerating dry kibble is not automatically better. Temperature changes may introduce condensation, and manufacturers may not have designed the package for repeated cold-to-room-temperature movement. Ask the manufacturer before changing the labelled storage method.

Treat opened wet food as a different product

Refrigerate or discard unused canned or pouched food promptly, using a clean covered container and the product’s own instructions. FDA general handling advice uses a refrigerator temperature of about 4°C or below, but the safe holding time after opening varies by product.

Do not feed from bulging, leaking, deeply rusted or damaged containers. If appearance or smell is unusual, keep the identifying information, stop using the product and contact the manufacturer. If the dog is ill, contact a veterinarian and report what was eaten and when.
